Info-trip through the DKMT-Euroregion, route for wine and gastronomy
East of the city of Arad the plains cease suddenly, hills rising abruptly from the featureless flatland. This hills actually belong to a mountain chain (Zarand Mountains / Munţii Zarandului) and are made out of volcanic rocks. The thin volcanic soils formed on them proved already in ancient times to be very good for growing grapes, the whole area is known as "Podgoria Aradului"(Arad's Wine Area), having famous wine-making centres as Miniş, Pâncota, Măderat, Mâsca, Ghioroc a.s.o. The less usually encountered types of soils are probably the main ingredient which helps producing vey good red wines. Such is the case with a wine called locally "Burgund" after the Burgundy province in France. There was a lot of debate about whether the wine of the Arad region is of true Burgundy breed or not, the debate even took serious forms and went before international courts. In the end, it seems that at least in Pâncota we deal with a true Burgundy wine breed. And the wine itself is just above any expectation.
