Calender 2012 with pictures of the Art Nouveau (Jugendstil, Secession) in Timişoara / Temeswar
The aesthetics of the beginnings of the XX century conquered all spaces of the people's ordinary life, and even beyond. We can still find today many Secession tombstones in Timişoara's cemeteries. Compared to the funeral monuments of the previous times, carved in the neo-Baroque style (very lofty and, hence, very expensive), the ones of the Secession also had the advantage of being somehow cheaper, since at least parts of them were decorated with geometrical elements. Very little has been written about the Secession preserved in the cemeteries, and the artists who created this monuments were almost anonymous compared to the famous architects of the time. On the other hand, the tombstones were much less bound to earth by practical matters than the buildings, so the artists knew almost no barriers, they were able to let their imagination loose. Those who created the tombstones were considered to be artisans (handicraftsmen); by the nowadays criteria they would rise up in the category of artists. The small monument in these images was created by Kornel Tunner and can be seen in the cemetery of Timişoara's Fabric district. Tunner's name can be found in ex-mayor's Geml monograph of Timi?oara, but is recorded as "handicraftsman". However, it seems that Tunner himself was not so ignorant about his status, since he put his signature on the tombstone, just like an artist would have done. The combination of geometrical decorations (on the tomb plate) and flamboyant elements (the vertical stone, with the wreath of roses and the dove) is surprising and offers a nice contrast. The same type of contrasting features (geometrical on the lower side, and lush-floral at the top) can be found at the building which gave the name to the whole artistic movement: the "Secession" building of Vienna, the first public exhibition place of the Austrian avant-guarde, at the turn of the century.
In the autumn of 2011 we realised a calendar aimed at presenting the astonishing heritage of Timisoara to the world. Our pictures show special buildings and monuments from special angles – we want to open new perspectives to the history of Timisoara. On the page of each month we have a large picture of a detail of the Art Nouveau architecture of Timisoara; this architecture is also known as Jugendstil or Secession (the last name is very popular in our town) or, plainly, "style 1900", and makes up an important part of our city tours of Timisoara. On the back side of each month's page there's more information about the depicted monument – now you can read that info here in this photo album.
The calender were aimed to be gifts to our friends, customers and guests. In the meantime we have already started working for the calendar 2013!
