general tourist info on romania

www.mtromania.ro
Official site of the Romanian Authority for Tourism. The general information on Romania is well documented, but the information about the sightseeing and about Romania's regions is superficial. Best thing here: you can choose between several languages: English, German, French, Spanish and Italian.

www.cimec.ro
Official site of the Institute for Cultural Memory. Well-documented, extensive information about many sites for cultural sightseeing. It rises well above any comercial presentation of the country, offering information which is in most cases unique on the web. Our link directs you straight to the English version of the site.

Historical Architecture in Romania
List of monuments with some images. The images are b/w and old, but at least it's a comprehensive list of monuments with short notices on each of them. In English.

Beautiful Romania (UNDP project)
The project of UNDP has a social goal in four towns of Romania:Alba-Iulia, Medias, Brasov and Braila (first three of them are towns in Transylvania region). Contains some intersting images from these towns - if the links on the English version don't work, try using the Romanian version.

romania's regions: the banat

www.dvhh.org
Site of the Danube-Swabian community in the U.S.A. Well-documented, a lot of information on all aspects - history, cultural sightsseing, tourists' info - regarding most of the places in the Banat.

www.infotim.ro
The server of a local IT-company hosts a small database of the cultural/historical heritage of the Timis County (Northern Banat). Our link points directly to the list of all important architectural sites in the Timis County, some of them documented with images and detailed information.

www.primariatimisoara.ro
Official site of Timisoara's City Hall (Northern Banat). Our links point directly to the photo albums of Timisoara; if you manage to overcome the language barriere (site only in Romanian), you can find some beautiful images on this small database.

www.baile-herculane.com
Description of Herculane/Baile-Herculane, mountain resort and thermal spa in the Southern Banat. Available languages: English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Romanian.

romania's regions: moldavia including bucovina

Monasteries of Bukovina
Site made by an Othdox parrish priest, depicting the painted monasteries from Sucevita, Moldovita, Voronet, Humor, as well as some other Moldavian monasteries which or not painted outside, but are historically and architecturally valuable. Our link points directly to the English version, but versions in French and Romanian are also available.

Leafpile's Page on Romanian Monasteries
A couple of travelers share their experiences throughout Europe. On this link you'll find more info on traditional Romania, besides descriptions of the outside-painted monasteries. In English.

romania's regions: transylvania

Medieval Transylvania
A group of photographers takes pictures of the fortified-churches of the Transylvanian-Saxons, which are indeed the most astonishing pieces of the Transylavanian Middle Age puzzle. Very many beautiful images, but almost no documentary information. Site in E nglish.

History and Arts
Ion Oltean's page of hystorical pictures. Our link points directly to historycal pictures from Transylvania, which is not that focused on Saxon herittage as most sites on Transylvania are - i.e., many less known Romanian or Hungarian monuments in Transylvania are depicted here. Only in Romanian (but rich in quality, original photos).

www.sibiu.hermannstadt.ro and www.sibiu.ro
Both sites containing useful info for cultural tourism in Sibiu (former Germ. Hermannstadt). The second one belongs to the city hall, so it contains also non tourist-related info. Both sites available in English, German, Romanian (our link points directly to the English version in both cases).

Pictures from Cluj
One of the chapters of www.cluj.info. Images from Cluj and surroundings, organized on several topics: Gothic Cluj, Bothanical Garden ("Gradina Botanica") a.s.o. Only in Romanian.

romania's regions: valachia including oltenia and dobrogea

Monasteries of Oltenia
Short descriptions and pictures of the neo-Byzantine monasteries in Northern Oltenia. Not in details, but at least it's in English.

Tourism - Northern Oltenia
Inside this portal of tourist destiantions throughout Romania, we've only selected sightseeing sites in Oltenia. The most interesting ones have more detailed descriptions and photos. In English.

Postcards from Wallachia
Another set of images from Valachia and Oltenia, containing not only monasteries. In English.

travel & tourism portals all over the world

European Travel Agents on www.ezilon.com
This is a list of important travel agents from the E.U., or at least for tourists coming from the E.U. countries. Good comparison possible between what Romania has to offer and what offer the other East European countries.
