Above all official slogans speaking about Romania's "intact nature", it is a fact that isolated mountain areas in Romania suffered very little human intervention, if any. You can find some poluted areas (mining centers or areas with steel industry), but the wide mountain regions where only the traditional farming ever existed are well preserved. And you can find secluded Carpathian forests which haven't met the ax (yet). |

Crossing the Cerna |
Each tour corresponds to a certain categoy oh mountain hiking - this is why we reccommend carefuly understanding the characteristics of the tour before booking it. Our clients (partner travel agents, private groups, companies) take benefit of proper conceling and detailed information and maps.
Group size: 8-13 guests, plus 1-2 guides and a driver. Tour content (and hiking degree, accommodation): very different, depending on the general type of tour. There are two main directions: 1) milder tours with very good, modern accommodation (fine mountain chalets or hotels) - this serves as base point from which we discover the mountain area through daily hikes, only carying easy day bags with us; and 2) longer hiking tours (several days of hiking&camping) with accommodation in tents, shepherd huts, caves but also at least 1-2 nights at typical peasant families in the mountains - so we cary the backpacks most of the time with us as we advance deeper into the Carpathians. Accommodation and boading: everything is comprised, ranging from the most expensive hotels to the most simple shepherd huts. Please read the information for each tour, respectively. We generally offer full-boarding for the active tours in the Carpathians (sometime including even drinks), whereas the lunch consists most days of cold meal (bag lunch). ATR01E: Retezat, Cerna Valley, Danube's Gorge / Iron Gates (9 days) | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
We first encounter the Retezat National Park, where we discover the alpine heights through several daily tours. After crossing the limestones of the Small Retezat we descend at the strong vauclusian spring of the Cerna. The Cerna Valley National Park is lower in altitude but has spectacular karst areas: canyons, gorges and barren karst - but also isolated villages still having no electrical power. We begun our journey at 2500 m. a.s.l. and end it in the Danube's Gorge at only 50 m. in the remarcable Iron Gates. Accommodation in 3* and 4*.
